HYDRATED LIME
INTRODUCTION
Lime as it comes out of Kiln after under going calcinations is known as Quick Lime and it consists essentially of Oxides of Calcium and varying amounts of Magnesium together with small quantities of Silica, Alumina, Iron Oxide and numerous other impurities.  Most of the uses to which this Lime is put are such which require that the quick lime should first be converted into the form of the Hydrated Lime essentially consisting of Calcium Hydroxide along with the associated substances that are derives from the impurities present originally in the lime stone.
 
The hydrated of quick lime takes places through the simple chemical reaction:
CaO + H2O = Ca (OH)2
The particle size and the surface of the resistant Hydrated Lime are dependent upon a number of factors. The important amongst these are the nature of the lime stone, the calcinations history, the amount, the rate and the technique of addition of water etc. As a matter of fact particles as small as 0.11 maizon or even smaller have been obtained by a simple manipulation.
 
 
MERITS OF HYDRATED LIME
Properly manufactured and packed dry Hydrated Lime should be considered to be a definite chemicals compound in uniform knows qualities.
 
 
USES
Hydrated Lime is one of the most important and cheapest Alkalis. It finds extensive use in neutralization of Acid effluents of various chemical and metal industries. In fact, it has become almost a heavy chemical required for practically every chemical industry in one of the other use.

Hydrated Lime is used in the manufacture of sand Lime Bricks, insulation materials, in road construction for soil stabilization of road bases with sub bases in the manufacture of refractory and in are dressing.
 
 
DEMAND & APPLICATION
Hydrated Lime definite advantage in having well defined uniform properties, in case of handling, storage and transport and in the possibilities of incorporation into plaster and mortars in exact propositions. Building construction, treatment of effluents, petroleum industries, manufacturing of Bleaching Powder and Calcium Chloride; Soil neutralization are some of the important consumer points of Hydrated Lime. With the enforcement of Pollution Control Regulations, for effective disposal of the effluents before they are discharged in all states, it has come handy cheapest and effective alkali available to the chemical processing industries where effluents are being discharged.

More than 2.50 Lakh tons of Hydrated Lime is required for manufacture of Stable Bleaching Powder and it is one of the basic but major ingredient of general purpose lime greases. It is also a starting raw material for soil stabilization. It works two way – firstly it agglomerates fine clay particle into coarse friable particles and secondly it provides a cementing action and some Alumina in the raw soil forming complex Calcium Silicates.

The results in transformation of the soil into more stable material for improved road durability.

It is also extensively used in water treatment, paper and pulp industries, manufacturing on inorganic salt, sewage treatment, ceramic industries. There is enormous demand for Hydrated Lime for making a masonry mortar, a building construction material because of the acute shortage of cement. The demand is being met by mostly for the petroleum industries for grease manufacture for the paint industries and for the some chemical process. However, the present supply of Hydrated Lime is in-sufficient to meet with it existing and growing demand of the product, the prospectus of new industries are very good.

In fact these days Hydrated Lime is in short supply and its prices have also lately gone up due to growth of demand.
